We may have said goodbye to summer, but there’s still a whole host of things to do this autumn. Whether it’s crunching through leaves in the outdoors or creating stunning works of art indoors, check out these perfect family destinations this season.
Tropical fun at The Living Rainforest
The Living Rainforest is a great little find designed to be just like a real rainforest, it’s warm & humid but by no means uncomfortable. There are great plants with spectacular leaves and animals like tortoises, turtles, fish, Goeldi monkeys and even a sloth. Butterflies & lizards free range as do most of the birds. Over the October School Holiday Week there will be tour guides who really know their “Stuff”. They point out all the things that are easy to overlook & are happy to answer all your questions. A starry treat this half term at The Lookout Discovery Centre
A choice of two amazing journeys through space in an inflatable planetarium. Join Ernest the Bear as he explores Space for 3-7 year olds. Exploring the Solar System is for older children age 7+. Shows should be on every weekend in October plus daily during half term, subject to minimum numbers at 11am, 12 noon and 3.15pm , 2pm for Exploring the Solar System. Half-Term Facts and Fun at Windsor & Royal Borough Museum!
Join the half-term activities at Windsor & Royal Borough Museum where your children can learn and have fun! Youngsters will be able to take part in the Big Draw and also find out about the Suffragettes. During the workshop they will hear all about the Suffragettes campaign during the early 20th century, which resulted in women being granted the right to vote. The Watermill Theatre Peter Pan Fun Day
Wednesday 29 October
Visit The Watermill for some fun-filled activities! Celebrating the magic of Peter Pan, this year’s family Christmas show, the morning will feature treasure hunts, stories in the theatre, pirate and fairy themed arts activities, wooden sword fighting workshops and the chance to dress up in a wonderful array of costumes from past Watermill shows.
The fun day is ideal for children up to 10 years and times are 10am to 11.30am or 11.30am to 1pm on 29th October. Tickets are £5 for children and £1 for adults and should be booked in advance by calling The Watermill’s box office on 01635 46044. Refreshments are available and there is plenty of free parking alongside the theatre.
The stunning Autumn Trail awaits in Windsor Great Park
As leaves turn from green to brown, there are activities aplenty for families to enjoy this autumn around the beautiful surroundings of The Savill Garden, Windsor Great Park. The Autumn Nature Trail is available from 25 October to 2 November starting at The Savill Garden going in to the wider Great Park. The cost is £2.50 per child and is available from The Savill Garden reception from 10am to 4pm.

Our Country Lives Big Draw
The Museum of English Rural Life is preparing to close for work on Our Country Lives, its exciting heritage Lottery funded redevelopment project. For the Our Country Lives Big Draw, families are invited to join University of Reading art students to create striking large scale art to be displayed on hoardings at MERL whilst the work takes place. The bookable sessions will take place on Thursday 30th October in the Print Studio at the Institute of Education next door to MERL. Attendees will design large format art inspired by the MERL’s collections using mixed media and the Print studio’s fantastic printing presses.
